Some of My Favorite Books Read in 2018

Hello everyone!

I’ve always loved reading. Books have always provided an escape from the stresses of real life. I read quite a bit in middle and high school. When I started college, (ahem, quite a few years ago now) I didn’t read as much for pleasure. I was in a slump for YEARS. Last year, I decided to jump back in with both feet and read 170 books. A good chunk of these can be attributed to participating in several readathons.

I’ve decided to compile a list of some of my favorite books that I read in 2018

Sleeping Giants by Sylvain Neuvelsleeping giants

I listened to this book on audio and truly believe I would not have enjoyed it as much if I had read it. The characters came to life and I became completely engrossed in the story. The concept of the story is also quite fascinating. A giant statue is found and throughout the story we find out it is actually a weapon. I assume the book probably reads as written transcripts which can fall flat, but the audio book plays as recorded transcripts, as if real scientists and government officials recorded their conversations. If you are a sci-fi fan, I would highly recommend the audio book.

Moloka’i by Alan Brennert

This was such a beautifully written story. This book is a historical fiction of a leper colony in the late 1800’s – early 1900’s. This book is one of my favorite historical fictions of all time. We follow Rachel’s life and the author does a wonderful job of captivating the reader and allowing the reader to feel for the MC. If you’re looking to get lost in a different time and place, I highly recommend this book.

Orphan X by Gregg Hurwitz

I had heard a lot of good things about this book and to be honest, I thought I would be disappointed, anticipating my expectations being too high. This was not the case. This book is what I’m looking for when I hear the word thriller. It was full of action, mystery, and intrigue. The MC does find a love interest, which I thought would ruin the story for me. I don’t have anything against love interests, but that’s not what I’m looking for in a thriller. Fortunately, the MC focuses on his goals and the LI is a temporary side story in this book. If you’re into mystery thrillers, this is the book for you.

Dark Matter by Blake Crouch

This book is a sci-fi thriller that I really loved. Sometimes you read so many books that they all start to seem similar. That was not the case with this book. This was an original concept and fantastically written. It involves the MC, Jason Dessen, travelling through time and alternate universes. I find myself still thinking of this book often. Whenever someone requests a sci-fi recommendation, I always think of this book.

The Magicians by Lev Grossman

I like to consider this book an adult version of Harry Potter. The MCs go to a school specifically for magic and throughout the series we follow their experiences and travels. It has some parallels to the HP series, but has a more mature feel. The MC, Quentin, isn’t instantly likable, but I found he grew on me as the series progressed. I also gave the first two books 4 stars and the last book 5 stars. If you’re into magic or fantasy you should give this series a try.

Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty

I don’t usually jump on the bandwagon when a book is popular. I generally find the hype build-up usually results in disappointment. This book was just written well enough that I was hooked from the beginning. The circumstances and situations were intriguing enough that I wanted to keep reading. It is considered contemporary with just enough mystery to keep it interesting.

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

It would be difficult for me to choose a book I read this year and state that is absolutely, 100% my favorite book. But if someone asked, this would definitely be in the running. I just loved everything about this book. The characters, their backstories, the plot, the writing. I don’t purchase very many books to reread. Not only did I purchase this book, I also purchased the sequel and the special edition. If you enjoy YA, books with great character development, magical aspects, and a captivating plot, then you should definitely read this book.

Some other books I read this year that I feel are worth mentioning are
Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman
The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
The Butterfly Garden by Dot Hutchison
Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia
The Other Einstein by Marie Benedict

Were any of these books on your list?

Thank for reading!
